Ismail Shammout (1930-2006) was born in Lydd, Palestine. He and his family were displaced during the 1948 Nakba and settled in the refugee camps of Khan Younis. In 1950, he traveled to Cairo to study art, later continuing his studies at the Academia di Belle Arti in Rome. He moved to Beirut in 1959 and married fellow Palestinian artist Tamam Al-Akhal. The couple lived and worked in Beirut, then later in Kuwait, Germany. and finally Amman, where Shammout spent his final years. 

Ismail Shammout's Gaza painting is one of his final and most emotionally charged works. It was created shortly before his passing in 2006.
